I’ve been feeling like a pretty fun ‘summer mom’ lately, even though my daughter is still in a preschool part of each day. For one, I think learning shouldn’t end in the summer, but also, I need some time to myself each day to get work done. Maybe some of my ‘work’ is just sitting quietly in a room alone without being pummeled with questions about the difference between amphibians and reptiles, but that’s just Mondays, you know?

I think we’ve struck up a good balance: she goes part of the day 4 days a week, and I freely let her miss a day if I have something extra fun up my sleeve.

Last week, a candy exhibit came to Dallas, and I really wanted to go! I’m positive that it was more for me than her, though she did have a good time. Each room had a candy theme with art sculptures made entirely from candy and famous pieces of art recreated with candy. We were particularly enthralled with the Frida Kahlo self-portrait made entirely with jelly beans, because Camille and I have been reading lots of kid books about Frida lately!

It was hard to top a day of candy free-for-all, but I knew our summer needed one last thing: MILKSHAKES!

Despite the candy exhibit experience, I’m actually one of those moms that limits sugar regularly. While Camille has enjoyed ice cream a few times, she had never had a sip of a milkshake before! I just knew that an easy milkshake recipe was going to be our next item on our ‘Summer Bucket List.’

For my family, I make milkshakes in the blender, because I’ve found that a really strong powerful blender (like a Vitamix) does all the work I need! I’ve seen the countertop machines that are specifically meant to make milkshakes, but I’ll grab my blender instead, thanks.

How to make milkshakes:

After typing in ‘milkshake how to make’ on my phone and being overwhelmed with results, I came up with my own plan. I decided to keep it really simple when it comes to milkshakes. Just ice cream, a splash of milk and some fun, optional additions. 

I also made the executive decision to always keep the ingredients in my house for the remainder of the summer months. Soon, it will be pumpkin season, and these milkshake ingredients will remind us of our fun summer days!

Basic milkshake recipe:

The formula for how to make milkshakes is simple: 3 scoops of ice cream + 1 cup of milk. Anything else you want to add is entirely up to you!

I feel like it’s really important to distinguish milkshakes from smoothies in my house (otherwise, Camille will ask for a chocolate milkshake every morning for breakfast, hah!), so I use a heavy hand with the Reddi-Wip whipped cream and decorate it with a cherry on top.

My whole family loved these milkshakes; it was such an unexpected fun treat after dinner one night outside.

Strawberry milkshake recipe:

When I’m making a strawberry milkshake, I like to toss in a handful of fresh strawberries to make it extra delicious. Fresh strawberries with 3 scoops of strawberry ice cream plus 1 cup of milk is perfect!  

We love the Blue Bunny No Sugar Added strawberry ice cream, because it has swirls of strawberries all throughout—so pretty!

Milkshake vanilla: 

When I’m making a vanilla milkshake, I like to add 3 tablespoons of malted milk powder for that classic soda fountain flavor. So, it’s 3 scoops of your favorite vanilla ice cream with one cup of milk, plus malted milk powder.

Blue Bunny’s Homemade Vanilla ice cream is my favorite vanilla among all of the vanilla ice cream on the shelves, and that says a lot!

If I’m making a chocolate milkshake, I also add malt powder because my husband loves a good chocolate malt! This is why he loves my malted chocolate chip cookies, by the way.

His perfect chocolate malt recipe is 3 scoops of chocolate ice cream with one cup of milk, plus malted milk powder. If I have chocolate milk in the fridge, I use that instead of plain milk to make it a double chocolate milkshake!

Blue Bunny’s chocolate ice cream is what my husband requests the most. The chocolate is so rich and creamy!

How to make your favorite milkshakes: vanilla, strawberry and chocolate versions. Each recipe makes one milkshake--scale up as needed.

Ingredients

For the chocolate milkshake:

  • 3 scoops Blue Bunny Cchocolate ice cream
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 3 tablespoons malted milk powder (optional)

For the vanilla milkshake:

  • 3 scoops Blue Bunny Homemade Vanilla ice cream
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 3 tablespoons malted milk powder (optional)

For the strawberry milkshake:

  • 3 scoops Blue Bunny Double Strawberry Swirl ice cream
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1 cup chopped fresh strawberries

Toppings:

  • Reddi-Wip whipped cream
  • hot fudge sauce
  • sprinkles
  • Maraschino cherries

Instructions

    1. Make each flavor one at a time in the blender: combine the ice cream, milk and malted milk powder (if using) or strawberries in the blender.
    2. Blend on high speed until smooth.
    3. Pour into a glass and serve.

*Each recipe makes 1 milkshake; double or triple the recipe as needed to serve more.
