Pears in Mulled Wine
Are you and your Valentine the health-conscious type? I think that’s fantastic, but I hope y’all know that on Valentine’s Day dessert is mandatory. Pears poached in a spiced mulled wine is the perfect light dessert. Enjoy it with a scoop of vanilla bean ice cream and a sprinkling of crystallized ginger. After you enjoy the pears, strain the poaching liquid, reheat and enjoy the mulled wine next to the fire with your sweetie.
Pears in Mulled Wine
Yields 2 pears.
Ingredients
- 3 cups dry red wine (I use a Cabernet Sauvignon)
- ½ cup water
- ¼ cup sugar
- 2” piece of cinnamon stick
- 1 clove
- ½ teaspoon ground allspice
- 1 4” strip of tangerine zest
- 2 firm red d’Anjou (or Bosc) pears
- Vanilla ice cream for serving (optional)
- Crystallized ginger for serving (optional)
Instructions
- In a small saucepan with a 4 cup capacity, pour in 2½ cups of the wine. Add the water, sugar, cinnamon stick, clove, allspice and zest. Bring this mixture to a simmer.
- Meanwhile, carefully peel the pears, leaving the stem intact. If you would like the pears to stand upright on a plate, trim the bottoms flat.
- Once the sugar is dissolved in the mulling mixture, add the pears carefully. If the liquid does not almost completely cover the pears, add more wine. Simmer the pears for 10 minutes, cover and turn off the heat.
- Let the pears cool before removing them for their wine bath. Serve with a scoop of your favorite ice cream and diced crystallized ginger.

I love pears so this is right up my alley!

Yummm! I’ve always wanted to try pears as dessert. I saw a really good recipe for pears wrapped in phyllo dough with melted chocolate inside! I like that you offered a healthier recipe

Poached pears are one of my all-time fav desserts!!! Plus I made a big batch of crystallized ginger this year so always looking for a new way to add it in!!! Delicious, delightful! (And thanx so much for all your sweet comments on Potato Chowder… It is somehow soooo exciting when someone makes your food and then tells you they liked it! As far as peppers go, I throw in whatever I have from my CSA or whatever looks good at the market… I prob used poblanos when I did the post…) PS – Stay warm!

Now that’s a beautiful dessert! I’m not usually a huge fan of mulled wine, but I can appreciate that it would be excellent with pears and ginger.
